You should volunteer, too.

Everyone should do some volunteer work, somewhere.  It could be Habitat for Humanity - a fun experience for the handyman in you - or some other charity organization like a food bank, Big Brothers / Big Sisters - one that can make a personal difference in a child's life - or, like me, working at golf tournaments, which help support a vast array of local charities.  The PGA Tour surpassed $1B in donations a few years ago, and the annual amounts are growing each year along with the TV audience, live attendance, and the corresponding need for armies of volunteers to do the dozens of tasks required to put on a major sports event.  Volunteers enable the PGA Tour, and the other organizations that run other tournaments, to direct large portions of ticket sales, sponsor dollars, and TV revenues to the charities they support.  It could not be done on the scale it is being done without volunteers.
