You should volunteer, too.

Everyone should do some volunteer work, somewhere.  It could be Habitat for Humanity - a fun experience for the handyman in you - or some other charity organization like a food bank, Big Brothers / Big Sisters - one that can make a personal difference in a child's life - or, like me, working at golf tournaments, which help support a vast array of local charities.  The PGA Tour surpassed $1B in donations a few years ago, and the annual amounts are growing each year along with the TV audience, live attendance, and the corresponding need for armies of volunteers to do the dozens of tasks required to put on a major sports event.  Volunteers enable the PGA Tour, and the other organizations that run other tournaments, to direct large portions of ticket sales, sponsor dollars, and TV revenues to the charities they support.  It could not be done on the scale it is being done without volunteers.

And it's FUN!  If you like golf at all, to play it or to watch it, this is the best way to be involved in the game at the highest levels.  And some not-so-high levels that are often even more fun.  I like being inside the ropes with the players, but if the responsibility of feeding data to live TV is too daunting, or the task of walking 18 holes is too much, there are many other positions that you can fill.  The most familiar one might be the marshal, the people you see on TV holding up the "quiet" signs and helping to manage the movements of the crowds.  There are also many "behind the scenes" jobs, like driving players to and from the airport or hotels, keeping the coolers filled on the tees, and many more.  They all allow plenty of time for watching golf, up close and personal.

This blog will relate stories of my days walking the fairways with professional and amateur golfers, caddies, parents, celebrities, and other volunteers.

And stories of my own rounds as I travel the US in my RV, on a quest to play the Golf Magazine top 100 courses "you can play", or memorable experiences with my golf buddies.  Like the wildlife we saw last weekend

He let us play through.
